The full-back jarred his leg in a collision with an advertising hoarding in the latter stages of United’s opening-day win over Newcastle but has not been too badly hurt and Alex Ferguson expects to have the former Monaco man available.

Wayne Rooney has gone 13 games for club and country since his last competitive goal, although he did score twice when United beat Fulham at Old Trafford in March, just before his present barren streak began.
