At a meeting of the Clare County Board last night in Ennis, Micheal McDermott was appointed as the new manager of the Clare senior footballers.

McDermott, who has won back-to-back county SFC titles with Kilmurry-Ibrickane, is replacing Frank Doherty who resigned after the All-Ireland second round qualifier defeat to Donegal in July.

Former Mayo midfielder Liam McHale will be part of the new Banner management team as a coach, along with fellow selector James Foran. A third selector will be ratified in the coming weeks.

McHale is eager to continue his role as manager of the Ballina Stephenites senior side, as long as it fits in with his Clare commitments and vice versa.

The 44-year-old has aspirations to manage his native Mayo and hopes his work with the Banner men will set him on the right road.

"I've always said that I want to manage Mayo some day and this is a stepping stone in that direction," he told the Mayo News.

"I'm really looking forward to this new challenge in Clare.

"I really enjoyed working in a coaching capacity with Kevin McStay and the Mayo Under-21s, and with John Maughan and the Mayo seniors. This will be a great opportunity for me."
