Wednesday's TV tips

Shanghai Knights (BBC3, 8.00pm)

(2003) Following their antics in the Wild West in Shanghai Noon, Chinese warrior Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) – pronounced John Wayne – and hapless cowboy Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson) travel to Victorian London to catch the killer of Chon’s estranged father.

There, the double-act stumble upon a plot to murder Queen Victoria, orchestrated by dastardly Lord Rathbone (Aidan Gillen).

For pure unabashed entertainment, Shanghai Knights is hard to knock, despite a script which makes little sense, charging from one dazzling martial arts sequence to another, and marrying physical acrobatics with some wonderful Harold Lloyd-esque slapstick.

The Autistic Gardener (C4, 8pm)

Alan Titchmarsh, Bob Flowerdew and Pippa Greenwood all have rather apt names for celebrity horticulturists.

Now there’s another to add to the list, and his moniker beats the lot. Alan Gardner is a garden designer by trade, and he was recently diagnosed as having Asperger’s syndrome.

He believes the condition has helped him get to the top of his profession, and now he wants to find out if others with conditions that, like Asperger’s, fall within the autistic syndrome, can excel as gardeners too.

During this new, four-part programme, he will chart the progress of five people as they attempt to transform neglected plots into something of which even Capability Brown himself would have been proud.

My Million Pound Council House (Channel 5, 8pm)

The controversial Right to Buy scheme was introduced by prime minister Margaret Thatcher in 1980 to allow council tenants to purchase their homes at a discount - but do the people who took advantage of the offer still feel they did the right thing by getting on the property ladder?

This documentary looks at the scheme’s impact as a man who bought his Hackney town house from the Greater London Council with an initial deposit of £1 prepares to put his house on the market, while a tenant who bought her flat on the Aylesbury housing estate in Southwark faces an uncertain future as the area is undergoing a major regeneration programme.

Children of the Gaza War (BBC2, 9pm)

During the past six years, children growing up on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have experienced three wars.

One of these conflicts, which took place in 2014 and last 51 days, resulted in the deaths of more than 500 youngsters, all but of them Palestinian.

Almost every child in Gaza has lost a family member to the ongoing unrest, while those on the Israeli side of the border live in constant fear of rocket attacks and raids from gunmen using underground tunnels.

“It’s no not fair,” says 10-year-old Michal, who lives in a kibbutz less than a mile from the Gaza border.

“Your home is supposed to be the safest place in the world for you, but it’s just not true.”

He and others like him talks to presenter Lyse Dourcet about their often terrifying experiences.

The Interceptor (BBC1, 9pm)

The team tries to find the source of toxic pills responsible for two deaths, including a young girl, and discover a link with a criminal gang that is already under investigation.

Cartwright agrees the lead is worth pursuing, but only if it will further their aims of getting higher up in the organisation.

A kidnapped woman may hold the key to finding the factory where the pills are being produced and, as Roach waits to hear news of his foray into the pill business, he’s unaware of the net closing around him.

Crime drama, starring O-T Fagbenle, Ewan Stewart, Trevor Eve and Robert Lonsdale.

Long Lost Family (TV3, 9pm)

Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell present the series which aims to reunite family members after years of separation.

Bradlee Allen is about to get married and is desperate for his father, whom he has not seen for ten years, to be at the ceremony.

The last time the pair were together things ended on a sour note and Bradlee wants to heal the rift before his big day.

Bridget Eyles from Saffron Walden only discovered she was adopted at the age of 11 when she overheard a chance remark by her mother to her housemaster at her boarding school.

Even at that young age she always felt different from the rest of her family, and this made her determined to find her real mother.

The People’s Debate with Vincent Browne (TV3, 10pm)

For the first time in Irish television, TV3's Constituency Debates are taking place in all 40 constituencies in the country, before "live" audiences and the TDs that dare to face an audience of their own constituents.

Also featuring entertainment features, followed by a preview of tomorrow's newspapers.

Tonight the debate will take place in the Tullamore Park Hotel covering the Offaly constituency.

From Russia with Cash (C4, 10pm)

A reporter goes undercover to investigate increasing evidence that the property boom in London is being partly fuelled by overseas buyers laundering money.

Using secret cameras and posing as a Russian government minister, he finds out how estate agents react to his plan to use millions of pounds of stolen money to purchase a high-end property in an upmarket borough of the city, giving an insight into how such deals are being done in an increasingly complicated market.

Das Boot (Film4, 11.55pm)

(1981) This epic drama focuses on the crew of a German U-boat during the legendary Battle of the Atlantic in 1942.

The Nazi fleet suffers heavy losses, but the men at the heart of this drama must obey orders, remain professional and remember their duty as soldiers – despite the threat of death lingering at every moment.

Director Wolfgang Petersen’s film is one of the greatest war movies of all time thanks to its realistic portrayal of life in a submarine.

However, despite a runtime of over three-hours, this isn’t a heavy going affair – there’s plenty of gallows humour too. Jurgen Prochnow, Herbert Gronemeyer, Klaus Wennemann and Hubertus Bengsch are among the cast.
