Wednesday's TV tips

Inspector George Gently (BBC1, 8pm)

All good things must come to an end, but that idea won’t make it any easier for Gently to deal with losing Bacchus.

His right-hand man has finally been promoted, which means he will need a new sergeant.

But for now, Gently’s attention is taken by an investigation into the discovery of a female GP’s corpse on the moors.

She suffered from mood swings and motor neurone disease, which makes the detective’s colleagues think she committed suicide, but Gently is convinced she was murdered and her estranged husband becomes the prime suspect.

Feisty WPC Rachel Coles grew up in the area covered by the GP’s practice, and helps with the inquiry _ surely she would make the ideal replacement for Bacchus?

Peter Kay’s Car Share (BBC1, 9.30pm)

Kayleigh clambers into the car one morning looking like she’s been dragged through a hedge backwards, and it soon turns out she’s still half-drunk from a wild party the night before.

However, she and John soon have more to worry about when a smelly colleague tries to cadge a lift to work. Sitcom, starring Peter Kay and Sian Gibson, with a guest appearance by Reece Shearsmith.

Maternity ward comedy, starring Darren Boyd, Jennie Jacques, Fay Ripley, Paddy McGuinness and Aisling Bea, with Elarica Gallacher.

Murder in Successville (BBC3, 10pm)

Imagine Stella Street with the death rate of Midsomer Murders, and you might just come up with something resembling this new comedy series.

Tom Davis stars as DI Sleet, who works the mean streets of Successville, which is home to some of the world’s biggest celebrities (played by some rising comedy talents).

Unfortunately, it’s also home to some ruthless killers, as each week Sleet has to recruit a genuine celebrity sidekick to help him solve a murder – and the stars have no idea what they are letting themselves in for.

In this opening episode, Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing is working the beat as he helps Sleet look into the death of a local restaurateur by the name of Bruno Tonioli.

FILM: Age of Heroes (ITV4, 10.00pm)

(2011) Sean Bean and Danny Dyer lead the cast of this low-budget tale of heroism and self-sacrifice during the Second World War, inspired by real-life events.

Major Jones (Bean) recruits an elite platoon of men to parachute into Nazi-occupied Norway to steal radar technology, which the enemy is using to pinpoint incoming Allied planes.

Hot-headed Corporal Rains (Dyer) worms his way into the unit and he undergoes intensive training before heading behind enemy lines to carry out the dangerous mission.

However, Nazi Commander Teichman (Eric Madsen) and his troops are waiting for the plucky Brits and it becomes clear that they have been double-crossed. With no obvious escape route, Major Jones joins forces with rebel leader Steiner (Aksel Hennie) and hatches a daring plan to race for the border.

Bugsplat! (Channel 4, 10.30pm)

Here’s a one-off comedy that’s flown under the radar, its appearance on our screens has come so out of the blue that even Channel 4’s own press website isn’t promoting it.

But we’re guessing that should the programme turn out to be a hit, a full series will follow. The fact that it’s written and directed by Guy Jenkin bodes well.

Alongside Andy Hamilton, he’s the brains behind Drop the Dead Donkey, Outnumbered and Ballot Monkeys, but here he’s flying solo. The story takes place at UK Drone HQ, where RAF pilots James, Lexi and Peter are based following a stint in Afghanistan.

Their latest task involves hunting for a terrorist, while their commanding officer deals with a PR disaster. Hugh Skinner and Rufus Jones star.
