Monday’s TV tips

17 Again (Film4, 6.55pm)

(2009) Thirty-seven year-old Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry) feels like he has been dealt successively bad hands by fate, with no end in sight to his life of eternal misery.

But, when he tumbles over a mysterious bridge into a whirlpool and is magically transformed into his 17-year-old self again – aka Zac Efron - life looks a whole lot better.

Heading back to school, Mike bonds with his son and daughter again and single-handedly teaches the young people of the world how to behave with dignity.

Burr Steers’ body-swap comedy has all the usual elements of the genre, but the enthusiastic performances of Efron and Perry makes it a joy to behold.

**New Series** The Goldbergs (RTE Two, 7.30pm)

Under the watchful eye of an 11-year-old boy’s video camera, the Goldbergs face the challenges of life in the 80s, including two new teenage drivers and a grandfather who shouldn’t be allowed behind the wheel.

Starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin and George Segal.

Animal Rescue (TV3, 8.30pm)

Ireland’s Animal Rescue is a 12-part creative documentary series highlighting the heroic and noble work of the ISPCA, along with a wide variety of wildlife rescue organizations, as they tackle the country’s most pressing animal welfare issues.

We follow their trials and tribulations as they take on abusive owners, liberate ill-treated animals and prepare for prosecutions.

SAS: Who Dares Wins (Ch4, 9pm)

New series. Selection for the SAS is one of the world’s toughest job interviews and physical fitness is one basic requirement, but what’s really being tested is psychological resilience and character as candidates undergo sleep deprivation, interrogation and a series of increasingly complex mind games.

In this programme, ex-special forces soldiers recreate the selection process for 30 civilian men, with the first episode seeing the recruits arrive at an isolated barracks in Wales and are introduced to directing staff Foxy, Ollie and Colin, under the watchful eye of chief instructor Ant.

Crimecall (RTE One, 9.35pm)

Each month this long-running, popular programme uses reconstructions, CCTV footage and live studio appeals to look for information from the public, to help with Garda investigations.

Calls to the programme have helped lead to numerous convictions over the previous eleven series. With Philip Boucher Hayes and Grainne Seoige.

**New Series** Republic of Telly (RTE Two, 9.55pm)

The IFTA award-winning Republic of Telly returns to RTÉ2 with presenter Kevin McGahern ripping up the telly for your entertainment, along with brand new member of the team, comedian Joanne McNally.

Disclosure: Irelands’ Screen Slaves (TV3, 10pm)

Do you wake up with Facebook or go to sleep with Twitter? Do you photograph or video every moment and share it on your newsfeed, YouTube or Instagram?  Are you a #SocialMediaAddict? If so, you are not alone.

Surveys estimate most of us pick up our phones around 150 times a day, often to check social media. In this brand new documentary for TV3, Adrian Weckler meets self-confessed social media addicts of a variety of ages, and sets them the challenge of doing a digital detox for a full week.

Whether at locations like the music festival Castlepalooza, or at a Dublin TweetUp, Adrian also gets the views of a wide variety of social media users and experts about how Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, are changing our relationships, our brains and our behaviours.

Fargo (Ch4, 10pm)

The first series was a slow-burning hit involving weird and wonderful characters and a gripping storyline.

We can expect more of the same from the drama’s second run, which features a largely new cast of characters and is set in a different time period.

It’s now 1979 and Vietnam veteran Lou Solverson is a young state police officer who, along with his father-in-law, Sheriff Hank Larsson, is investigating the links between a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate.

Patrick Wilson plays Lou, the father of the first series’ central character Molly.

He’s joined in the cast by Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst and Nick Offerman, while Bruce Campbell makes an unmissable appearance as US presidential candidate Ronald Reagan.

The Ray D’Arcy Show (RTE One, 10.05pm)

Airing every Saturday night broadcaster Ray D’Arcy marks his return to RTÉ television with a new prime-time Saturday night chat-show.

The Ray D’Arcy Show will play to his strengths by featuring an irreverent mix of chat, comedy and music alongside guests from all walks of Irish life.

It will include Irish and international celebrity interviews as well as strong human interest stories alongside comedy and music from both well established and emerging talent.

The Fear (BBC3, 10.30pm)

When it comes to making low-budget movies, one genre rules supreme – horror.

This new competition aims to find the next film-maker capable of creating a Saw or Paranormal Activity-style smash.

Over the next six weeks, contestants will showcase their short films before an audience who will choose the best of them, which will then be judged in the final by Eduardo Sanchez, who made The Blair Witch Project.

The Long Kiss Goodnight (3e, 11pm)

(1996) Academy Award winner Geena Davis stars with Samuel L. Jackson as a typical mother and schoolteacher with a past that's anything but typical - only she can't remember it and it could come back to kill her in The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Eight years ago, Samantha Caine (Davis) lost her memory, and since then she has slowly built a new life, even though disturbing flashes of memory and strange, seemingly innate skills haunt her.

When a car accident and a news story start to trigger her memory, she hires detective Mitch Hennessy (Jackson) to investigate.

But others are watching, and she has only been safe as long as she can't remember.

Starring: Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson
