Soccer: Wasps chief seeks play-off advantage

Newcastle have rested a number of key players for their Premiership trip to Wasps.

But their hosts are likely to be near full strength as they chase a top two slot.

The Londoners' faint title chances were ended with defeat at Bath 10 days ago.

But coach Nigel Melville is aiming to glean as many points as possible from their last four games as they bid to finish runners-up to champions Leicester.

With home advantage guaranteed in the first two rounds of the play-offs should Wasps achieve their aim, there is plenty for Melville's side still to play for.

Flanker Josh Lewsey is the only notable absentee after spending a short stint away from the club on Army duty and Wasps start strong favourites to beat an under-strength side that conceded 50 points to Leicester on their last outing.

"We have three home games out of our final four games and it is important for us to take advantage of that," said Melville.

"With the play-offs coming up, we have a big chance to put ourselves in a good position.

"Newcastle gave us a good hiding up there earlier in the season and if we are honest, it was thoroughly deserved.

"But we are aiming to put that right and are looking forward to the game."

Wasps at least will not have to face the mighty presence of England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, who is among the big names rested by Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew.

Wilkinson is not even afforded a place on the bench, unlike half-back partner Gary Armstrong, flanker Andrew Mower and lock Stuart Grimes.

Dave Walder starts at stand-off for the Tetley's Bitter Cup winners, who are also hoping to add the European Shield to their trophy haul as well as securing a top eight place.
