McCreevy could increase taxes to balance books

The Government are not ruling out tax increases to save the public finances.

The Minister for Finance could still use the increases to keep the lid tight on the Government’s coffers.

In these tougher economic times, Charlie McCreevy has said that he will do anything to keep finances sound.

This week has seen nearly €300 million in cut backs from the Department of Finance.

However, Mr McCreevy is saying that he will not be abolishing the special savings scheme which is costing the government hundreds of millions more than first expected.
