Brian McIver surprisingly quit his role as Donegal senior football manager last night, after it emerged that a number of the county's clubs want a new man in charge.
Just three weeks ago McIver informed the Donegal Co Board that he was content to stay on as manager of the Tir Chonaill side for another year.
But the Ardboe man faced opposition from the clubs at last night's Co Board meeting in Ballybofey and conceded that 'with a sense of negativity from some clubs', it was time to step down.
He actually resigned from the position after last year's championship but then changed his mind and reapplied for the job.
Last October he was ratified as Donegal boss for another three years, winning a vote by 38-6 as he beat off competition from Charlie Mulgrew, Jim McGuinness and Donal Reid.
McIver initially took on the Donegal position in September 2005, when he replaced long-standing boss Brian McEniff.
He guided the Tir Chonaill men to their first National League Division 1 title in 2007 and a GAA SFC All-Ireland quarter-final place the previous year.
However, this year's championship campaign was a disappointing one for McIver's charges who bowed out of the All-Ireland race in the qualifiers, going down to their Ulster rivals Monaghan.
And despite some public backing from his players, most notably from team captain Kevin Cassidy, McIver's reign is at an end.
