The Queen was given a rousing welcome at a school in Derry today as she began a visit to the North.

The brass band of Lisneal College struck up to mark the arrival of Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Young children from nearby primary schools waving Union flags braved driving rain outside the new secondary school building to greet the royal couple on the first of a number of engagements in the north west.

During their tour of the complex the Queen and the Duke were shown some of its state-of-the-art facilities, including a dental surgery and a fingerprint biometric payment system in the canteen.

The North's First Minister Peter Robinson and Secretary of State Shaun Woodward were among the dignitaries greeting the royal couple.
