Eriksson confirms resignation

Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed his resignation from Serie A side Lazio and suggested he could take up his new post as England coach as soon as next month.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed his resignation from Serie A side Lazio and suggested he could take up his new post as England coach as soon as next month.

The 52-year-old Swede made his announcement at a press conference in Rome this morning following speculation about his future over the past 24 hours.

After state broadcaster RAI claimed he had been sacked yesterday, following Lazio's 2-1 defeat by Napoli in the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, the end actually came slightly later than expected.

"It was a decision taken in my car on the way to Formello (Lazio's training camp) this morning," said the Swedish coach, who guided Lazio to the Italian title last season.

"The first people to know were the players."

It appears that Mr Eriksson will now be able to take up his position as England coach in time for the friendly against Spain at Villa Park on February 28.

"I have chosen to take this step and I hope it is better for the club and that results will come in the future," he added. "I don't like what I did but I think it is better for the club."

Mr Eriksson will now contact the Football Association to discuss a revised start date. When he agreed to become England boss last October, he signed a five-year deal which was due to begin on July 1 of this year.

However, FA officials will be keen to have him on board as soon as possible, particularly as England are currently bottom of their World Cup qualifying group, with vital games to come in March against Finland and Albania.

"I don't know when I will start and I have to speak with the FA, maybe February 1."
