The Minister for Finance has planned to dramatically reduce the fees payable to barristers working on the tribunals.

The current daily rate for a senior counsel at the tribunal is €2,500, and Charlie McCreevy reportedly wants to bring this amount down to just €500 per day, approximately the same rate as the High Court judge who oversees the tribunal.

It is not yet clear whether this will apply to new tribunal legal staff only, or existing lawyers as well.

It is expected that the plans will provide for fees to be fixed ahead of the commencement of tribunals or inquiries.
