A survey has confirmed that Ireland has one of the highest rates of asthma in Europe.

The survey also found that 90,000 sufferers here do not have their asthma under control.

Almost one in eight people suffer with asthma - a rate worse than that of Britain, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

The study, "Asthma Insights and Reality in Ireland", was conducted in August and also shows that 75% of those with asthma have never received a lung function test, which is considered a vital measure of the ailment.

Many also do not know how to use their inhalers properly, while 20% of people studied also suffer disruption to their sleep at least once a week.
