Racing: Mixed day for Fitzgerald

Mick Fitzgerald suffered from mixed fortunes at Cheltenham - taking the feature race on Fadalko before being told he faces a six week lay-off.

Fadalko belatedly opened his account for the season with victory over Wahiba Sands in the Grade

two Faucets For Mira Showers Silver Trophy Chase but the ride aggravated an injury to the jockey’s wrist.

Fitzgerald felt discomfort in the wrist which has proved problematic since his fall from Marlborough in the Martell Grand National and an x-ray at Cheltenham General Hospital revealed that he has a broken bone in his left wrist.

The jockey will now miss plum rides at Ayr this weekend, as well as Punchestown and Sandown next week.

Fitzgerald said: ‘‘Its been playing me up and the x-ray confirms there is a small crack in a bone in my left wrist and I will be coming back here to have it plastered.

‘‘There is never a good time for something like this to happen as I’ve got a busy week and a bit coming up with good rides at Ayr, Punchestown and Sandown so it’s not good news as I’m going to be out at least four weeks.’’

Fitzgerald’s mount in the Gala Casinos Daily Record Scottish National, Marlborough, will now be ridden by Paul Carberry.

The rider will also miss Fadalko’s next outing as Paul Nicholls is planning to run the Sir Robert Ogden-owned nine-year-old in the attheraces.co.uk todaysbestbet Chase at Sandown on Saturday week.

Fadalko was coming good after a patchy season and he forged ahead with seven fences to negotiate before staying on six lengths too strongly for the runner up with his stablemate Earthmover a distance back in third spot.

Nicholls admitted Fadalko’s performances this winter had left him scratching his head on occasions, saying: ‘‘He’s been so frustrating as he’s taken so long to come to hand but he always seems to come good in the spring it’s just that he’s taken longer this time.

‘‘He could well go to Sandown next week as he was second in the race last year behind Edredon Bleu, as long as he comes out of this okay. He’ll definitely be entered in any case.’’
