Dublin Bus is selling off 50 second-hand double-decker buses in a bid to modernise its fleet on the capital’s streets.

The twelve-year-old vehicles are currently in service but will be withdrawn between July and September.

Dublin Bus would not disclose the asking price for the buses but newly-manufactured double-deckers cost about €350,000 each.

The transport firm today advertised for buyers on the Government’s tender website and set a June 20 deadline for tenders.

The 1995/1996 Volvo vehicles are 9.8 metres in length, are fully automatic and have a capacity for 74 passengers.

They have front and centre doors as well as an emergency rear exit.

“These vehicles are currently in service in Dublin and are due to be withdrawn from the Dublin Bus fleet during July to September 2007,” a company spokesman said.

A new delivery of 100 buses was added to the 1,200-strong Dublin Bus fleet by Transport Minister Martin Cullen in January.

The semi-state company carries around 160 million passengers a year within the Greater Dublin Area, which now includes north Kildare, north Wicklow and east Meath.
