Rural minister says no more closures of post offices, garda stations or schools

There will be no further closure of post offices, schools or Garda stations in rural Ireland.

The Rural Affairs Minister said she is planning to get Cabinet agreement on the issue very soon.

Ann Phelan was speaking at the Labour Party national conference in Kerry. She said there should be no further hit to services in rural Ireland.

"At this particular moment in time, I'm drafting a memo to Cabinet that while the recommendations … are on the table, that there are no more closures in rural Ireland of post offices, of schools, of garda stations," she told delegates.

She also said her advice extends not just to closures, but to "diminuation" of public services.
