Schoolboy stuns Augusta crowd with impressive round of 73

Chinese schoolboy Guan Tianlang, at 14 the youngest player in Masters history, carded a first round of 73 today to lead the contest to finish top amateur at Augusta National yesterday.

Guan recorded three bogeys and one birdie in a front nine of 38 but came back in 35 with two bogeys and three birdies, the last coming from just off the green on the 18th.

"I was a little bit nervous on the first tee but after a great tee shot on the third everything felt comfortable," said Guan, who played nine holes of practice with Tiger Woods earlier this week.

"I just want to enjoy the tournament and have some fun and hopefully play some good shots."

US Amateur champion Steven Fox shot 76, Nathan Smith and TJ Vogel rounds of 77 and Michael Weaver recorded a 78, while British Amateur champion Alan Dunbar was round in 83.

The 22-year-old Scot went to the turn in 46 with his first par of the day coming on the ninth, but came back in 37 to restore some pride.

"I was just trying to stay positive," Dunbar said. "I didn't get off to an ideal start. I had trouble at the first and then trouble at the second (where he took a triple-bogey eight) and then I just kept leaving myself the wrong side of the hole on the front nine. I couldn't get going."
