Corbett wants Tipp to lift it to 'another level'

Lar Corbett gave a word of warning to the hurling world after Tipperary's Munster final demolition of Waterford, declaring: "We now have to drive on to the next level."

Despite running out seven-goal winners over the Déise in a simply stunning display, Corbett feels that Tipp have yet to hit their peak.

The Thurles terror, who finished with an incredible haul of 4-4, said: "It's great to get the win but we're under no illusions. Waterford weren’t up to the pace and they'd accept that themselves.

"There's a huge hole there for Tipp to fall into, to get complacent. We're in an All-Ireland semi-final and we can't let minds soften.

"We have to drive on to the next level. If we stay at this level we'll pay the consequences for it next day.

"If you ever think you’re at the top of anything, it’s the biggest mistake you could make. There's always another level.

"Thank God we've a panel and management there that are prepared to drive on, and to avoid complacency."

Hailing it as 'a super performance', Tipperary manager Declan Ryan was also cognisant of the need for further improvements.

Pauric Mahony knocked over 12 frees and on another day, the Premier County could have been hurt by those scores.

"(Discipline) is something we worked on earlier in the season, and I think we only conceded eight frees against Clare, which was a big plus for us," said Ryan.

"It's obviously something we can work on for the next day. It's important to have things you can work on, and it was considerable how many we conceded."

He added: "I'm just delighted with the way the players went about their business today and everything seemed to go right on the day.

"We won plenty of good ball out around the middle of the field and in our half-back line early. They delivered some great ball in and some days they end up in the back of the net, some days they go wide.

"Today everything seemed to go right for Tipperary and it was one of those days."

Ryan acknowledged Corbett's top-scoring efforts, praising him as 'an incredible player when he gets the right type of ball.' The man himself deflected any personal plaudits, preferring to giv nods to his team-mates and the management.

"The supply of ball coming from midfield, half-back...you don't need me standing here to tell ye the boys are getting the ball in nice and quick," explained Corbett.

"That's a forward’s dream and that was the difference on the day. We all got chances today.

"There's fierce confidence there, but that comes from somebody, or something, and the management are the ones giving it to us.

"Team confidence is down to Declan (Ryan), Michael (Gleeson) and Tommy (Dunne), they picked up where the lads left off last year.

"One big thing with them was to see if we'd go soft after winning an All-Ireland, that we might take the foot off the gas, but they pushed us on and that's what it's about. They brought us on and we had to step up."

Next up for Ryan's charges is an All-Ireland semi-final on Sunday, August 14. Another victory there and they would be just 70 minutes away from achieving the county's first back-to-back All-Ireland senior successes since the mid-1960s.

"Five weeks to an All-Ireland semi-final now and we know we have a bit of work to do to keep the feet on the ground," admitted the Clonoulty-Rossmore clubman.

"I'm sure there will be plenty of hype after today's performance. It's new territory for Tipp in a lot of ways, to score that many goals.

"There is going to be a certain amount of talk, but we have a lot to look forward to. We're lucky, I think we have a lot of experienced players in the group and a lot of the younger guys are used to winning.

"The job will be to perform at our optimum level the next day we go out as well."
