New Ross Town Councillor John Dwyer is resigning from Sinn Féin, it was announced today.

Sinn Féin general secretary Dawn Doyle issued a statement this morning describing the move as disappointing and urging him to "return his seat to the party".

Sinn Féin also adopted a similar stance last week when Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke resigned from the party.

Mr Dwyer is a former General Election candidate who lost his seat on Wexford County Councillor at the recent local elections.
