Alex Hales has decided to set up as a public trainer and will shortly be leaving the Andrew Cohen-owned Woodhall stables in Hertfordshire where he has operated on a private basis for the past two years.
Hales, 29, a former assistant to Charlie Mann and Kim Bailey, has enjoyed a degree of success in his spell at Woodhall with a total of 13 winners but he has now decided the time has come to further develop his career.
Explaining the move, Hales said: “I am currently negotiating on a number of potential training properties in England and I will kick off with around 20 horses for the start of next season.
“During the last two years I’ve enjoyed a good relationship with Andrew Cohen and have learned a great deal and when I go there will be a wonderful opportunity for an experienced individual to come in and take over the reins at Woodhall.
“The facilities here are excellent with three separate gallops and 25 boxes in what is basically an almost brand new operation.”
Cohen predicts a big future for Hales, the younger brother of Irish trainer Eddie, and said: “I’ll be very sorry to lose him and I’m sure that one day he will go right to the top.”
