A man is due in court tomorrow accused of a brutal murder close to a Belfast army base.

David Cupples, 25, died on Christmas day after he was attacked and beaten on his way to work at Girdwood base in the north of the city three days’ earlier.

The civilian worker from east Belfast suffered serious head injuries during the assault which happened in the mainly loyalist Clifton Park Avenue area.

A blunt object may have been used in the attack, detectives believe.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with the murder and is set to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court in the morning.

Two other men have been accused of trying to assist offenders in connection with the attack.

They have denied attempting to obtain and dispose of video evidence with intent to prevent the arrest of the killers.

They were remanded in custody after appearing in court on New Year’s Eve.
