The removal of Private Peadar O’Flaitherta, who was killed in East Timor last week, will take place in Galway this evening.

The 21-year-old was accidentally shot dead last Monday while on peacekeeping duty. His remains will be taken from his home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Lettermore.

Minister for Defence, Michael Smith, is meeting with Peadar’s family ahead of the removal. He says it is a devastating loss for them.

"At any time it would an extremely sad event for any young family but when it happens very far from home in very tragic circumstances it is an even bigger burden to carry. I extend my sympathy to his parents and his brothers and sisters and his family."
