FG: Govt 'abandoned National Cancer Strategy'

Fine Gael spokesperson on health and children, Olivia Mitchell TD, said today the Government has abandoned the National Cancer Strategy.

Fine Gael spokesperson on health and children, Olivia Mitchell TD, said today the Government has abandoned the National Cancer Strategy.

She said: "We have the third highest death rate from cancer in Europe and many of those who die are awaiting so-called elective treatment."

Of the 29,812 people who died in Ireland in 2001, 7,577 (or one in four) died from cancer. 16% of Irish cancer patients receive radiotherapy, while the EU average is 66%.

Ms Mitchell said these statistics prove the Government has abandoned the 1996 National Cancer Strategy.

She said: "Under the stewardship of this Minister and this Taoiseach patients with cancer have had to resort to court action to vindicate their right to essential, life-saving hospital treatment and care."

She added: "The Government's record is abysmal. No attempt has been made over the past four years to change the way our health services operate or to deliver more cohesive and accessible patient care even though the Government and its predecessor have had more money at their disposal than any previous administration."

The Fine Gael TD said the Government has failed to give the priority to cancer services which could see more people survive cancer, have an enhanced quality of life and enjoy many more years with their loved ones.
