FG: Govt should protect Shannon-Heathrow route

Fine Gael is calling for government intervention to prevent Aer Lingus from ending its services between Shannon and Heathrow Airport.

Fine Gael is calling for government intervention to prevent Aer Lingus from ending its services between Shannon and Heathrow Airport.

The decision has been made as part of a plan by the airline to set up a new British hub at Belfast International Airport.

Up to 50 jobs may be lost in Shannon and local Fine Gael TD Pat Breen is demanding that the Government intervene, even though such a move has already been ruled out.

He says Transport Minister Noel Dempsey and local cabinet minister Willie O'Dea should both be stressing to Aer Lingus the importance of the Heathrow route to the west of Ireland as a whole.
