A British backpacker has been seriously injured in a car crash which killed two people in Australia, police said today.
The 29-year-old woman is being treated for suspected spinal injuries at a hospital in the Queensland state capital, Brisbane, after the four wheel drive she was travelling in crashed yesterday afternoon.
Eight people, including the woman and her British boyfriend, had been returning from a trip to Fraser Island off northern Queensland when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
A 27-year-old Japanese woman and a 23-year-old woman from the Netherlands died in the accident.
Sergeant Kim McCoomb of Queensland Police Service said: “The four wheel drive rolled several times after the driver lost control on Riverheads Road in Hervey Bay.
“A 29-year-old English woman has been taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries. She was accompanied by her British boyfriend who was not injured.
“The car rolled several times so they were lucky, but unfortunately two others died.”
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and is a popular tourist attraction.
It is not known at this stage where in Britain the woman is from.
