A man has been found dead in a car which plummeted into a roadside canal.

A man has been found dead in a car which plummeted into a roadside canal.

The vehicle entered the water on the Fathom Line outside Newry at around 2pm.

A major search and rescue operation was launched involving police from both sides of the Irish border and firefighters.

A PSNI spokesman said the body of a man was subsequently recovered from the submerged car.

It is understood the dead man was aged around 60.

The road, near the border, remained closed at the Drumalane junction/Fathom Road as motorists were advised to seek alternative main routes for their journey.

Police said investigations into the incident continued.

Witnesses should contact police officers in Newry.
