Choill makes it a family affair for Mullins

Lios A Choill provided Willie Mullins with a family success in the Marge Brown Memorial Maiden Hurdle at Navan.

The Carlow trainer not only saddled the winner, but his amateur rider son Patrick was in the saddle and the seven-year-old gelding is owned by his wife, Jackie.

The 9-4 second-favourite was produced to lead at the final flight as the under pressure long-time leader Bog Warrior fell.

Jetson, the 2-1 favourite, was the only danger but Lios A Choill stayed on the better to win in cosy fashion by a length, making amends for his own last-hurdle tumble at Thurles when he had the race at his mercy.

Harold Kirk, representing the winning trainer, said: "Lios A Choill was obviously unlucky when he fell at Thurles the last day and is a great looking horse who will jump a fence in time. He has loads of gears, should have a big future and will be better on better ground.”

Jessica Harrington's fantastic run of form continued as Saludos (5-2) bounced back to form in game fashion with a gritty all-the-way win in the Flyingbolt Novice Chase.

Things had not gone to plan for the gelding on his last two starts since he won over this course and distance in November, but he made no mistake this time with a creditable performance.

Answering Robbie Power’s every call, Saludos saw off Montan on the gruelling run from the last fence to win by a length and three-quarters.

“He’s tough horse and I’m delighted he’s back to winning ways. He burst a blood vessel the last day but we treated him and gave him a week off,” said Harrington, who bagged two Grade Ones at Leopardstown on Saturday.

“He’s back to himself and while he’s not entered at Cheltenham, Aintree is a possibility.”
