Many homes in the area have been flooded or are under threat of flooding and much of the area has now been evacuated.

Liz Hogan, who has been living in Clonlara for nine and a half years, says it has flooded "on and off" over the past 10 years and something should have been done to mitigate the effects of flooding before now.

Meanwhile, Bus Eireann services from Galway northwards are operating without significant delays. Services southwards from Galway are experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes due to road closures and diversions, Bus Eireann said this morning.

Cork services continue to operate normally with some diversions.
