It is emerged that fruit fumes caused a jet carrying 308 passengers to make an emergency landing in Shannon airport this morning.

The British Airways Boeing 747, en route from Miami to London, landed at Shannon after a warning light indicated there was a fire in the hold.

However, an airport spokeswoman said a closer examination found that the alarm went off because rotting fruit was giving off unusual fumes.
