Worthington faces qualifer with host of injuries

Millwall striker Josh McQuoid will train with Northern Ireland this morning after being added to the squad for tomorrow’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia at Windsor Park.

McQuoid, who was handed his debut in the friendly against Morocco in November, will provide attacking cover after David Healy was suspended for the match following a yellow card in the 2-1 defeat to Serbia on Friday.

Rangers man Kyle Lafferty, who left the pitch after 45 minutes of that match, is also struggling with a knee problem, leaving manager Nigel Worthington with just Warren Feeney and Liam Boyce definitely fit and available for the Group C clash.

McQuoid has six Northern Ireland Under-21 caps and has scored 12 goals this season, all for former club Bournemouth and none since his January move to Millwall.

Worthington has other injury concerns ahead of the Slovenia match, one his side must win if they are to keep alive their hopes of qualification.

Captain Aaron Hughes is a doubt after dislocating his shoulder in Belgrade, although he played the full 90 minutes, while Jonny Evans has a groin problem.

Defeat in Belgrade ended Northern Ireland’s three-game unbeaten run in qualifying, making the road to Euro 2012 all the harder in the process.

Despite that, one man who took plenty of positives from the match was debutant goalkeeper Lee Camp.

The former England Under-21 international started against Serbia after an injury ruled out long-term number one Maik Taylor and made a couple of impressive saves in an assured display at the Crvena Zvezda Stadium.

The 26-year-old Nottingham Forest man will make his second appearance tomorrow after seeing off the challenge of Jonathan Tuffey and Alan Blayney and he warned his rivals, including Taylor, he has no intention of handing over the gloves.

“I absolutely loved the experience,” said Camp. “I know things didn’t go our way but making my debut was a very proud moment for me and my family.

“I’m now here to be the number one. I got my chance earlier than expected with Maik’s injury but I don’t intend on giving up the shirt.

“I’m a very focused and driven person and I now want to establish myself as the main keeper in the Northern Ireland team.

“It’s been a great week and I’ve enjoyed every minute of the build-up to the actual game.

“Obviously I’m very disappointed not to finish a winner in my first game but there is plenty for us to build on.”
