Liverpool to face Juventus

Liverpool have been drawn to play Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Liverpool have been drawn to play Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The two clubs have not played each other since the 1985 final at Heysel, when 39 supporters died after crowd trouble.

Barclays Premiership leaders Chelsea will take on Arsenal’s conquerors Bayern Munich.

The ties will take place over two legs on April 5-6 and 12-13.

Today's draw also threw up the possibility that Liverpool could meet Chelsea in the semi-finals should both English clubs progress.

The other two quarter-finals saw AC Milan paired with city rivals Inter and French champions Lyon drawn against PSV Eindhoven.

Liverpool, who have won the competition four times and will host the first leg at Anfield, were banned from European competition for six years after the Heysel trouble.

They have reached the last eight only once since, when they were beaten by Bayer Leverkusen three years ago.

Leverkusen were the team Liverpool overcame to reach the quarter-finals this time when they completed a 6-2 aggregate win last week.

The form of Rafael Benitez’s side however remains inconsistent, and they face Everton in a derby crucial to their hopes of securing fourth place in the Premiership this weekend.

Juventus by contrast are in contention to win Serie A and a level on points with AC Milan at the top of the table.

Chelsea will have to succeed where Arsenal failed to reach the last four for the second successive season.

The Gunners were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by the German giants whilst Chelsea progressed in a thrilling but stormy tie against Barcelona.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon told Sky Sports News: “It is a big draw. There are no easy games at this stage and we are delighted to be here.

“We have got to give respect to Bayern, they have won it four times and are the only team to win three in a row.

“It will be a massive game but our scouting network have been out there looking at all our potential opponents and we will be fully briefed.”

Chelsea will play at home in the first leg but Kenyon does not believe manager Jose Mourinho will see that as a disadvantage.

He added: “I think Jose is quite indifferent to it. It is going to be a big night in London.”

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry revealed the club would work with Juventus to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Heysel disaster before their tie.

Parry told Sky Sports News: “For sure we will be doing something. There is a friendship between the two clubs and supporters.

“It is now 20 years since Heysel and this is something we will be giving thought to. We are confident we will get it right.”

Liverpool are ranked as one of the outsiders for the competition but Parry believes the Reds are capable of causing a shock.

He added: “They don’t come much bigger, that’s for sure. It’s great to be here and we would have taken anyone at this stage, they all have to be beaten sooner or later.

“We know what European nights are like at Anfield and they don’t come any bigger than this one. They will be two fantastic occasions.

“There is a long way to go. There are some extremely good teams left in but as saw last year anything can happen.”

AC Milan meet old adversaries Internazionale in the competition for the second time in three seasons.

They met in the semi-finals two years ago when Milan – the only team to beat Inter in Serie A this season – won on away goals before going on to beat Juventus in the final.

Dark horses Lyon, the French champions and along with Chelsea the only club left in the competition not to have won it, have a good chance to reach the semis after drawing PSV.
