UEFA pondering Eduardo action

Arsenal striker Eduardo could be charged with diving by UEFA today following the incident in which he won a penalty against Celtic.

Arsenal striker Eduardo could be charged with diving by UEFA today following the incident in which he won a penalty against Celtic.

European football’s governing body chose to examine tapes of the moment the Croatia international appeared to throw himself to the ground in the penalty area during Wednesday’s Champions League play-off clash at the Emirates Stadium.

UEFA disciplinary officials will decide today whether to act, and Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith has already called for Eduardo to be punished retrospectively.

A UEFA spokesman said: “We are reviewing the match to see whether a disciplinary investigation should be launched.”

UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed Eduardo could be suspended and said his plan of having two additional assistant referees (AARs), one next to each goal, would cut down on diving.

Platini, speaking in Monaco, said: “There are disciplinary procedures at UEFA and the procedure could be taken to suspend the player.

“Scotland often start such procedures – last time it was a Lithuania player who was sanctioned.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will not want to lose Eduardo for the start of Arsenal’s Champions League group stage campaign; however, the Gunners manager’s focus this weekend will be on the tricky trip to Manchester United.

Wenger is increasingly hopeful Cesc Fabregas will be fit for the match.

The midfielder had to miss the Celtic clash after suffering a hamstring injury in the 4-1 win over Portsmouth last weekend.

Wenger will want Fabregas in his side to face the Barclays Premier League champions, and revealed the signs are looking up, even if there is no guarantee he will be involved.

Wenger told Arsenal TV Online Fabregas trained yesterday and his fitness will be checked on today.

“He will have a definite test... where we will decide if we include him in the squad or not,” Wenger said.

Speaking yesterday, Wenger said: “I would say it is a real 50:50. Yesterday I would say it was 60:40 against but he looked positive today.”

Arsenal are also hopeful Wales international Aaron Ramsey will be fit after fears he had suffered a serious knee problem against Celtic were allayed.
