Tánaiste's car egged at Dublin protest

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore's car has been egged during a protest in Dublin.

Irish socialist republican political party Éirígí and People Before Profit are thought to have organised the protest.

They held placards and shouted obscenities at Mr Gilmore.

The Tánaiste was attending the launch of at UNICEF Ireland's Children's Referendum campaign in Ballyfermot, west Dublin.

Mr Gilmore was with Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald and had been due to launch the charity’s support for the children’s referendum campaign.

A spokewoman for the Tanaiste said the Cabinet colleagues abandoned the event because of concerns for the safety of local schoolchildren at the launch.
