Wenger rues new injury headaches

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was left counting “heavy losses” from the international break as his depleted squad prepared for Saturday‘s Barclays Premier League clash with Everton at Emirates Stadium.

Captain William Gallas, full-back Bacary Sagna and striker Nicklas Bendtner will all be unavailable both for the visit of David Moyes’ men and then next week’s Champions League trip to Fenerbahce after suffering injury while away with their countries.

Wenger also has concerns over Cesc Fabregas (broken nose), Robin van Persie (muscular) and Johan Djourou (concussion), but remains hopeful they will be able to figure.

The one piece of good news for the French coach, though, was midfielder Abou Diaby looks set to be included in the squad for the first time this season after overcoming a thigh problem.

“Unfortunately we have lost some players over the 10 days – William Gallas, Bacary Sagna and Nicklas Bendtner,” Wenger said.

“These are heavy losses and we have to compensate them. Fortunately the three of them don’t look to be out for a long, long time - but they will be out for the weekend game and I think the game on Tuesday.

“As well as them, Djourou got concussion during his game with Switzerland and will be assessed to see if he is available. He does not look too bad and he could have a good chance to play.”

Wenger added: “Robin went [to Holland] with a muscle problem, but he came on during Wednesday night’s game.

“From the reports I got, he should be all right. Both of them will be assessed. Also I am told Cesc has a broken nose. It should not stop him playing. He is here now and is being assessed.”

One way the losses will be compensated for will be in the return of Frenchman Diaby.

“At least Abou Diaby is back in the squad again,” Wenger said. “Even though he has not played games he will be used, at the least in the squad, because we have lost those three players.”

Given the injury to Gallas, fit-again French defender Mickael Silvestre looks set for a belated debut after his transfer from Manchester United.

Teenage midfielder Aaron Ramsey is a potential replacement for Fabregas after again impressing for Wales Under-21s in their European Championship play-off against England earlier this week, when he scored in the 2-2 draw at Villa Park.

Wales coach Bryan Flynn, whose side lost 5-4 on aggregate, said: “Aaron is a fantastic player who is progressing in the right direction. His passing is sublime and his finish for the goal was just sensational.”
