Violence overnight in the North

The security forces have come under attack for the second night running in Portadown.

Police and troops had petrol bombs, paint bombs, bricks and bottles hurled at them in the Corcrain area of the Co Armagh town last night.

The RUC said the trouble, which lasted for several hours, involved groups of up to 100 loyalist youths. Unlike the previous night there were no security force injuries.

RUC District Commander Superintendent Ian Chapman said he condemned the disorder of the past two nights and appealed for local community leaders to do whatever they could to ease tensions.

In Ballymena, Co Antrim, a shooting led police to a haul of weapons.

Officers investigating the shooting, in which a single shot was fired from the driver’s side window of a moving car, later stopped a car and arrested three men.

In a follow-up search of a house they seized a handgun, air rifle BB guns, ammunition, batons, fireworks and other items.

Meanwhile, a man was recovering in hospital after being shot in a paramilitary-style attack.

He was taken to hospital after being shot in both legs in the Havana Walk area of North Belfast, said the RUC.
