Noonan happy about 'No' result

Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan TD today welcomed the result of the abortion referendum and said the next Dáil must deal with the issue through legislation.

"Public opinion is evenly balanced and widespread consultation must take place on the legislation necessary to reflect the X Case interpretation of Article 40.3.3 in statute law.

"This is the second time in ten years the people have declined to roll back the judgment in the X Case. It is clear that a majority - albeit small - want the Supreme Court decision on Article 40.3.3 to stand.

"The Taoiseach declared this referendum a personal crusade, but then he turned his back on it and didn't even speak during the debate in the Dail.

He also refused my offer of a televised debate, a forum which I felt would have led to the people being better informed.

"Dealing with this issue through legislation will require leadership, something

the Taoiseach has so far singularly failed to provide," said Mr Noonan.
