Jefferies - Bradford squad needs 'trimming'

Jim Jefferies has admitted there is no room for passengers at Bradford as he bids to pull the Premiership strugglers out of the relegation mire.

Jim Jefferies has admitted there is no room for passengers at Bradford as he bids to pull the Premiership strugglers out of the relegation mire.

Jefferies' men are currently propping up the rest of the top-flight, and find themselves five points adrift of second-bottom Manchester City despite and an impressive New Year's Day victory away at Leicester.

And the Bantams boss has confirmed that he will be trimming down his squad in an effort to avoid relegation after the West Yorkshire club survived by the skin of their teeth last season.

"I think we have to trim the squad down and we'll make any decisions in the next few days.

"We've got to assess the situation - there are players getting back from injury now and there are players who were brought it at the start of the season.

"I've brought in three and suddenly the squad has increased to numbers that not everybody is going to be happy with and not everybody can play.

"So there are going to people who aren't going to be playing regularly and we've got to assess that. In the coming weeks we will be speaking to them about that.

"So we have to first of all speak to the players and let them know, and if they want to go and play on - on a a regular basis - then I'm not sure they'll stay as that's what everybody wants."

Asked about the prospect of bringing in new players, Jefferies admitted: "To allow you to do that you've got to make provisions to make space - you can't keep adding all the time."

But the former Hearts manager, who took over at Valley Parade six weeks ago following the sacking of previous boss Chris Hutchings, praised the contribution so far of the three players he has brought to Bradford.

Billy McKinlay was Jefferies' first signing a free transfer from Blackburn, before Robert Molenaar joined for £500,000 from rivals Leeds at the end of November.

Eoin Jess is the latest addition to the Bantams squad on a three-month loan deal from Aberdeen with a view to a permanent switch.

Jefferies said: "Robert Molenaar had a while out of the Premier League so he's had to find his feet and he was outstanding at Leicester.

"So was Billy McKinlay who again had to take time to find his feet, and Eoin Jess came in on loan and played very very well. "

He added: "We've got a deal agreed with Aberdeen in writing that provided he shapes up we want to get his signature.

"He's always had the potential but was left wondering if he's fulfilled it, so he's now got another opportunity to prove he can."

And Jefferies revealed that after a month-and-a-half in charge of Braford, he is already falling in love with the club.

"It's a terrific club and what we're looking to do is obviously keep them in the Premier League, but the first few weeks you've got to find out about your players and the systems that are suited to us.

"So it's all part and parcel of finding things out unfortunately we've got to do that at the same time as winning matches," he explained.

"We came in after 14 games and only had seven points. Now we are on 15, so in the next seven games we have taken more than that so that's progress.

"We've got talent but I think it's just the way we go about things and the way we do things, some people respond to it and some don't.

"At the end of the day we want to work hard and we want our players to work hard - so far that's not been a problem - but only time will tell if we can sustain it. "
