Petition urges government to be 'genuine' in aid commitment

The Department of Foreign Affairs has received a public petition as part of UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has received a public petition as part of UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Over twelve thousand people signed the petition which urges the Government to keep their commitment to spend point seven percent of GDP on overseas aid by 2012.

They also want the Government to stick to the interim targets of point five percent by 2007 and point six percent by 2010.

Helen Keogh of World Vision Ireland said she thought the Government “appeared to be genuine” in their commitment to overseas aid.
