Aston Villa are understood to have rejected a £4m bid from Bolton for central defender Gary Cahill.
Wanderers manager Gary Megson is believed to have tabled the bid to sign Cahill earlier in the week.
But the midlands club turned down the offer – as they had previously from local rivals Birmingham.
Cahill has just returned from a successful three-month loan spell with Coca-Cola championship side Sheffield United.
Villa manager Martin O’Neill is in no hurry to offload a player who came through the academy ranks.
But he also recognises the desire of Cahill to play regular first-team football - something he cannot guarantee him at present.
The 22-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Villa Park after the arrival during the summer of Curtis Davies from West Brom and Zat Knight from Fulham.
Cahill would dearly love to become a first-choice player at Villa but also recognises he may have to move on to further his footballing career.
O’Neill confirmed earlier in the week that he had received no bids for Cahill which matched his valuation of the player – believed to be in the region of £5million.
