Kildare overcame the double shock of a 42nd minute Willie Quinlan goal and the red carding of Willie McCreery three minutes later to hold off a determined Carlow challenge in their Leinster SFC quarter-final at Croke Park.

Quinlan's score brought the game to life, leaving Kildare to introduce Niall Buckley and Martin Lynch in the 46th minute as Carlow threatened to take over.

However, it was the accuracy of corner-forwards Padraig Brennan and John Doyle which helped Kildare regain the initiative to battle for a five-point victory.

Kildare lead 0-11 to 0-06 at half-time with five other points coming from Brennan and Dermot Early while Willie Quinlan hit three of Carlow's points.
