Culchie Festival bids to break motorbike record

Up to 1,000 Honda 50 motorbikes could ride into the record books in Co Meath this weekend.

Up to 1,000 Honda 50 motorbikes could ride into the record books in Co Meath this weekend.

The organisers of the Great Honda 50 Run hope to smash a previous tally of 884 vehicles, which were assembled at a parade in the Netherlands in September 2005.

Last year’s event in Summerhill, Co Meath, attracted 541 bikes from every county in Ireland.

Money raised from Sunday’s parade in Athboy goes towards Irish Autism Action and the Co Meath branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Green Party leader Trevor Sargent and Queen of Moore Street May O’Gorman will be among the scrutineers.

Honda 50s were a popular traditional vehicle used by farmers in rural Ireland and are now often used by pizza-delivery staff.

Organiser Paddy Rock said: “If you have a Honda 50, get on your bike and head to Athboy for a great day out while raising money for good causes and hopefully becoming a record breaker.”

The Great Honda 50 Run is part of the Culchie Festival, which kicks off tonight with competitions among 25 contestants in tractor racing, nappy changing, sandwich making, potato picking, knitting and karaoke.

Mr Rock added: “The festival kicks off tonight with the launch of the Culchie Cocktail Trail and winds up late on Sunday night with the crowning of the new Culchie King and dancing in the marquee."
