Madrid ready to discuss new deal with Beckham

Real Madrid are keen to tie David Beckham to a new contract after president Ramon Calderon declared the former England captain a key part of the club’s plans.

Beckham’s current contract with the Spanish giants runs out next June and the 31-year-old could be free to negotiate with other clubs in January.

Calderon is keen to ensure that does not happen and revealed Madrid officials have spoken to Beckham’s representatives about a new deal.

“We have talked to his agent and we are in agreement to extend his conract,” Calderon said on Real’s official website, www.realmadrid.com.

“Beckham tells me he is happy in Madrid, that his children are happy, that Brooklyn speaks Spanish.”

A Beckham spokesman told PA Sport: “As yet no deal has been agreed but we’re due to sit down soon to discuss a new contract.”

Beckham joined Real in a £24.5million move from Manchester United in 2003, signing a four-year deal, but has yet to win any major silverware in his three seasons in Spain.

Nevertheless Calderon insists the 31-year-old is still a vital component of the Real squad.

“For Madrid he is an essential player because of the way he plays and what he represents. You should have seen him in the United States (during Madrid’s recent tour),” said the recently-elected president.

Calderon’s belief in the player will be a major boost to Beckham whose future with club and country has come under intense scrutiny this summer.

Having relinquished the England captaincy following the World Cup, he as then subsequently omitted from Steve McClaren’s squad for the new manager’s first match against Greece – a game won 4-0 by England last night.

With Real, the arrival of a new coach in Fabio Capello has put pressure on all of the club’s existing players following barren seasons on the trophy front.
