The Government is to use unclaimed life assurance money for charitable purposes.

Millions of euro in unclaimed policies will be transferred to the State from April 2004.

Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy yesterday published legislation which will set out the steps to be taken by financial institutions to identify the owners of dormant policies.

If the money remains unclaimed, it will be diverted by the State to charitable purposes.
