The worst fears of workers at Flextronics Plant in Tullamore, Co Offaly have been confirmed this evening. The company is to shed 370 of its 404-strong workforce.

Staff were informed of the decision by management at a meeting held at the plant. Tanaiste Mary Harney says she recognises that the loss of employment in Flextronic is another blow to the region, and says she’s committed to attracting new jobs to Co Offaly.

She’s confident that over the next few months, there will be better news for Offaly, as a number of potential investors are currently in negotiations with the IDA with a view to locating in the area.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that 80 jobs are to go in Co Cork. Surfacemount Technology is laying off the short term workers. A meeting on Friday will determine the future fate of the remaining staff.
