The Sinn Fein candidate for Dublin South West, councillor Sean Crowe, has called for a Saturday election. Cllr Crowe joins a number of politicians and student groups demanding the change.
Most agree that voting on a Saturday would result in a larger turnout of voters.
However, it is expected that the Taoiseach will announce May 17 this week as the election date.
Mr Ahern believes that many constituents would be away on the weekend and is therefore not in favour of a weekend election.
