Cowen ‘in favour of expenses transparency’

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has reiterated that he is fully in favour of transparency in the way government ministers and TDs deal with their expenses.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has reiterated that he is fully in favour of transparency in the way government ministers and TDs deal with their expenses.

Mr Cowen was responding to criticism from Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore, who accused the Government of failing to address the controversy surrounding political expenses.

Last night, the Ceann Comhairle, John O'Donoghue was forced to announce his resignation following revelations surrounding expenses he has claimed in recent years.

Mr Cowen told the Dáil this morning that the expenses regime was being examined and he was "absolutely" in favour of transparency.

Mr Gilmore meanwhile said his motion of no confidence in the Ceann Comhairle remains on the Dáil order paper.

Mr O'Donoghue announced his intention to resign last night after Mr Gilmore had tabled the motion in an effort to remove him from the position.

However, the Labour leader said this morning that he still wants the motion to remain active to allow for any possible changing circumstances.

Mr O'Donoghue wasn't in the Chamber for Leader's Questions this morning, with Leas Ceann Comhairle Brendan Howlin chairing proceedings in his place.
