French president Nicolas Sarkozy was today meeting other top government officials for discussions on how to put in place Europe’s multi-billion euro rescue package for Greece.
Prime minister Francois Fillon and the ministers for foreign affairs, the head of the French central bank, finance, budget and European affairs were due to begin the working meeting with Sarkozy at the presidential palace.
Greece says it needs a bailout in order to pay €8.5bn in bonds due on May 19 – while mounting fears that Germany might hold up its share of the overall €45bn bailout package agreed earlier this month were the catalyst to this week’s market turmoil.
