IMB issue warning over illegal condoms

The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) today warned it had discovered a quantity of illegally imported condoms which may be defective and have been sold in Dublin.

The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) today warned it had discovered a quantity of illegally imported condoms which may be defective and have been sold in Dublin.

With the brand name "Tulip", the condoms have been sold on Moore Street in Dublin from late March to late May. The product is in packs of 12, and the labelling is in Chinese.

Current evidence is that up to 436 such packs have been sold. The IMB understands that there were 4,000 boxes illegally imported and 3,564 boxes have been seized by the IMB.

The condoms do not meet the stringent European standard for condoms.

"Any member of the public who purchased these condoms is advised not to use them, as they may not provide an effective barrier to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases or work as an effective means of contraception," the IMB warned today.

The IMB is advising any consumers in possession of this product to dispose of it immediately. Any person who may have used this brand, and has any health concerns, should consult with their GP.
