Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe today issued a warning that his army is ready to "pull the trigger” on enemies of his government.
“We want to remind those who might turn on the state that we have armed men and women who carry guns and are allowed to pull the trigger on them,” he said in a speech on Armed Forces Day.
He delivered the warning in the local Shona language and departed from his text, which was largely devoted to extolling the virtues of Zimbabwe’s armed forces, which he said remained strong despite embargoes by the United States and the European Union.
Zimbabwe is in a state of collapse, with high unemployment, shortages of most basic products and an inflation rate nearing 1,000 per cent. Police have clamped down on even the smallest demonstration as Mr Mugabe has made it clear he will not tolerate dissent.
