Search for missing Irish surfer ends for today due to treacherous weather

Another search for a missing Irish teenager in Australia has ended with no result.

Nineteen-year-old Stuart Butler from Dublin had been surfing with friends - 26-year-old Levi Fahrenholtz and English teen Mike Fuller - in waters off Byron Bay this day last week, when they got into difficulty.

Fahrenholtz, a US citizen, was eventually rescued from the water, while Fuller pulled himself onto the rocks.

Search teams have been working all week to try to recover his body, but weather conditions at Tallow beach have been treacherous.

Police divers carried out more extensive searches today, but they have now been stood down.

Duty officer from New South Wales Police Department Blake Clifton said weather conditions had been difficult all week.

"The dive lasted about two hours but did not locate anything. Police have been in constant contact with the man's family and the operation continues," he said.
