A formal EU statement on the Israel-Palestinian situation is expected when foreign ministers reassemble in Co Offaly today.

The European Union has distanced itself from US backing for Israel's conditional pull-out from Gaza and the West Bank.

Presidents Bush’s support for the plan is viewed, on this side of the Atlantic, as going against the Middle East Road Map for peace and Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Brian Cowen said yesterday that there could be no settlement between the two countries without negotiation.

Minister Cowen also condemned the spate of kidnappings and murder of civilians in Iraq.
